I have never seen the movie of What We Do in the Shadows, but I did look up the trailer along with the best clips from the movie. I would have to agree with you on how funny it is. I watched the trailer and a couple clips and I laughed out loud. Its is just a couple a vampires and their life. There is a film crew that follows them around in their daily vampire life. I was taken back on how funny just the trailer was and a couple of the clips were. I wasn’t expecting it to be that good.
The movie seems to follow a “mockumentary” style, which really reminded me a lot of The Office. From just the trailer and some clips the humor seemed to be very similar to the show. The main characters in the movie are VIago, Deacon, Petyr, and Vladislav which really reminds me of the main characters from The Office; Dwight, Michael, Jim, and Pam. The camera crew seems to follow the main characters around in the movie just like the TV show.
Between the two, the humor theory that really sticks out to me is the Incongruity. Both in the TV Show, The Office, and the Movie What We Do in the Shadows, it is very prominent. In the movie, these vampires just say very unexpected things that catch you off guard. The scene I watched was the “Flat Meeting Scene”. They introduced the characters in the movie, and showed this scene about who was going to do the dishes. They were bickering so much and they just brought up inappropriate things to the situation that just make it funny. You as the reader, are expecting one thing but are throw with a different thing. You are really taken off guard. There seems to also be a lot of relief theory just between arguments that happen along with the superiority theory as well. The movie What We Do in the Shadows seems to be a very funny movie, and seems very closely related to the TV show The Office. The movie seems to demonstrate well the three theories of humor.
I also was not familiar with the movie and was surprised by the comic relief that was placed into the movie with perfect timing. I also liked how you tied in The Office to make a connection with the movie tying in something that everyone seems to relate to.
ReplyDeleteI like what you have to say. I especially like how you related What We Do in the Shadows to The Office. I think the mockumentary contributes to the comedy in both instances.
ReplyDeleteI would argue that the two are connected in that they are mirror images of each other (though can you see the vampires then?) The Office is a burlesque: it makes an ordinary situation extraordinarily absurd, whereas Shadows makes an extraordinary situation ordinary, which itself is absurd.
